So remember last year? Yeah, I still have yet to blog a lot of what happened. Life has changed A LOT for us in the past year. A big goal of mine for this year was to be better at blogging and so far, I’m really proud of myself. I’m starting to smooth out the kinks and make it a part of my regular workflow.

I want to go back and blog about all the stuff we did last year. I think it’s important for our business to keep up with the blog but more importantly, our lives. I would really love to have this one place where the best of all our work is at. Since we have not been so great at having a life outside of work, I figure I owe it to ourselves to at least get everything in here since this has been our life. With so many photos going through our hands, it’s easy to finish a job and move right on. I really want this blog to be a place where I can look back and see everything. This winter when all of our current work is done, I plan to go back through last year and blog everything that never made it on here.

To kick things off, lets go back to our BREAKfree workshop tour for 2010. One of our models emailed me a couple days ago to ask about photos and I was so happy to hear from her! The trip was so crazy especially once we got to china and then we moved a couple times when we got back home so I lost her contact information and never got her photos to her. It was a great reminder of all the old stuff I have yet to blog so I figured it would be a great start to kicking off my retro blogs. Perhaps that’s what I shall call all of them, because they are old. :)

This was from our Oklahoma workshop. Jill was great to work with. I loved her crazy outfits and she was really easy to shoot. I had a great time in Oklahoma. We met some really nice people at the workshop. Rebecca Manney of RM photography stands out in my mind the most. Since the workshop she has gone full time in photography and her work has improved a lot! She stands out in my mind because she was the only one who could make it to dinner the night before the workshop so we got to know her a little better. Her work ethic is something I will forever remember. It’s rare to meet someone who is a hard worker these days. Someone who is fully committed to putting in the time and doing things right is just not how our culture seems to be anymore.

Photography may seem like a “super fun job” from the outside. Whenever I tell someone what I do their eyes just light up with glee and say how great that must be. First, yes, I really do love what I do. I feel extremely blessed every year when we book up our weddings knowing that I have a job again this year where I can do what I do best and can work for myself. However, It’s a TON of work and by no means a 9-5 job. It’s not all fun, a lot of it is completely boring business stuff. If I only had to do the artsy stuff, then yes, my eyes might always light up with glee as well. To run any small business requires a really good work ethic. When things stop being new is when a solid work ethic kicks in and the strong survive. It doesn’t matter what the job is like, how much it pays, ect. I will always do my very best because what I do reflects on my character and who I am. Our lowest paying jobs get just as much of me as our highest paying ones. It’s also something that does make you stand out and I really hope people see than in me as much as I saw that in her. A year later, I still remember Rebecca because of her passion towards having a good work ethic so thats certainly something.

We are retiring the BREAKfree workshops for a while and teaming up with McVay Vision this year for a new series called FORWARDworkshops. It is 3 days and is geared more towards intermediate photographers instead of just beginners. One big difference will be more focus on off camera lighting with Ryan and business and marketing with Vince. We are not the most awesome business people so we didn’t focus a lot on that before but Vince is just brilliant when it comes to that so it’s a really nice addition. I, of course, will be taking a day to go over editing, workflow and design, as usual. :) www.FORWARDworkshops.com I’ll post more on this later, but the only date open for 2011 is October 3-5 so check out the website for more information.

Anyways, here’s Jill! :)

Not a huge post but I figured these images are worth seeing and the story of how we got them is worth telling!

The scene starts in Denver the day after rigerous scouting as always… We found a sweet Tim Burton wall to start with a great couple we found at the last minute. So things seemed to be going well…see? Pretty awesome.

So where does it go wrong you ask? Well I guess shooting in some of the places we do, we had it coming. That’s just the risk you take when you gotta get that shot you see in your head. Anyway, This lady comes up to me… Friendly at first and I though she was just passing through no biggie so I humored her as always. So then she starts actually talking to me and all the sudden talking about how her husband died and how much she misses him… It put me in an awkward spot because I really felt bad for her (even though she wreaked of booze and her crying was less and less genuine). So after a while I am just like I’m sorry I don’t know what to tell you! Then she started telling me her family was on extreme home makeover and how I should take a picture of her and her family because it would be good for me… Mind you this all happened very fast and I was getting very confused. Where was her family, how was I going to do that I have a workshop to focus on?

So I tell her just go get your family because I can’t leave (as she was tugging on me to come with her) So she said OK after a while and said she would be right back. Then Chris, one of our workshop attendees tells me he saw her and 3 big dudes across the street prior to her coming across the street. He said they were talking and looking over, and only she came up to me… Sounds very sketchy. So I was like “that’s it, lets take off”… forget about breaking down the flash let’s just leave and get the cars later. So we took off down the alley and about half way down we hear yelling and whistling from a block behind us. While I knew better then to look back I just kept speed walking as discretely as i could!!

We ducked into some hotel, and took a breath… It’s so messed up that they would try and play me like that… Play to my kindness, seeing it as a weakness. Makes me pretty upset to be honest. We have always given people the benefit of the doubt, but it gets harder every day unfortunately.

Annnnyway…heart-beating stuff… Once we got our nerves back we could finally get some mojo going! We got some great stuff playing with that Sigma 14mm!!

Andrea was down for it all… And she did goood.

Erika Jessop seemed to have more mojo in this location that I did… I will admit it! Still like it though! :)

We were lucky enough to find Kristina and Kevin through Jessica and Melanie since we didn’t have anyone to shoot for our LA workshop yet. We were staying in a rediculous town with nowhere to shoot so we drove up to venice and found some pretty cool things. There are some interesting people there… hahah

It was supposed to rain A LOT right during the time we had planned to shoot so we were really bummed. However, miracles happen to us a lot with the weather and the rain pushed back and started POURING right after we finished. We were prepared with cute umbrellas and hello kitty rain boots if we needed them. We could have done some fun things in the rain, but I am happy it was nice out just because it makes things so much easier.

There are two images in this post that are “beach” photos. They are probably the only beach photos you’ll ever see posted from us. Beach photos just always tend to look a bit cliche but I am really happy with how these couple turned out. This first one I actually love a ton, who would have thought?
Kristina is 5 feet tall and completely adorable!

Finding models for our workshops has turned out to be more difficult than I had ever imagined. So far every model had to cancel at the last minute or just never confirmed the time. Luckily we have found people to fill in at the last minute and things have worked out so far. It’s free photos so I know there are people out there who would want to do it, I think it’s just a lack of us being connected to them. So…. IMPORTANT NOTE: We are looking for a couple (engaged, just married, dating) or a model for our LA workshop this Saturday March 6th. We would need you from like 3pm – 6:30 ish. If you are interested or know of anyone who might be send an email with your name or the names of those you are suggesting and a photo to Ryan@GAUPERphoto.com. Thanks!

Today was our Phoenix workshop and thankfully our friend Jessie from home has family out here and she hooked us up with her cousin Heather. So thank you to both Jesse and Heather for helping us out so last minute, I don’t know what we would have done without you!

It was about 75 degrees and sunny here in Phoenix today and it…was…awesome. Gosh, I forget what that actually feels like and its just sooo soo good. There was just a tiny breeze and it was just amazing. This is the weather we had hoped to have for the past two weeks of our trip! Memphis, Dallas and Oklahoma were all very unseasonably cold.

Anywho, we are headed to Vegas tomorrow morning. It is about a 6 hour drive I think so hopefully we can head out early in the morning so we can do something at night. I got all inspired tonight because we had a short session with heather so I finished her set and figured why not get it up on the blog right away! So here are some of our favorites. :)

Last time when I mentioned all the posts that are yet to come and this wasn’t on that list…. haha well I promise those things still will happen but I have decided to just do what I want to do rather than put them in order on the blog so we will be going back to texas photos soon and I am hoping to get our oklahoma workshop up soon as well!

I wanted to blog every day of this trip but my goodness that just has not worked out for me. So I am gonna go back a few days.

After we left Austin we went up to dallas for 6 days and stayed with our friends Don and Karen Hunt. They didn’t have internet at their house so we had to go other places to find some which just made keeping up with the blog really hard. They live out in Cleburne which is just a small town but it is full of such awesome people. I have been there twice now and every time I just enjoy the people there so much. Texas is just the best. We did a short family session for them to thank them for letting us stay there and I’ll be posting about that next but here is a little preview. :)

Friday Morning: 9am – 11am was a couple of the best hours of my life. It is awesome to know people who are connected to such awesome people as Shannon. She is the queen of the theatre in Cleburne. She let us look through this big warehouse of all their clothes for the theater. We got to pick out the most awesome vintage dresses and accessories. My heart just nearly exploded with joy looking at all the amazing stuff. I didn’t think it would be as awesome as it was so I didn’t take my camera but luckily while I was nearly fainting from all the options Ryan got a picture of just a small part of one of the sections with his iphone. We spent two hours going through stuff and walked away with some great dresses.

SAD side note: We didn’t have enough time shooting in the workshop to use a few of the outfits we had with us… boo. Hopefully the next time we are in Cleburne we can do another shoot with Kamille (our model) and use up some of the other glorious things in there.

As we were getting ready to leave Shannon found a box someone had just donated of vintage glasses and it was amazing. There were so many cool frames in there that were in nearly perfect condition! We found these coke bottle glasses and I think they look great on us. Thank goodness we always have our phones on us when we forget our regular cameras!

So, thank you so much to Shannon for letting us use the awesome awesome clothes! They made the shoot so much fun!

Saturday:
The workshop. Whew! It was a long day! We started at 10am and went until about 9pm. To start the day off right, let me tell you about our friend Cheryl. She is one of my most favorite people…ever. I swear, I just met her the last time we were in Cleburne last year and I just instantly wished I lived closer just to hear some of her stories on a regular basis. The craziest things happen to her. She is hilarious and just an overall awesome woman. I knew having her in the workshop would prove to be funny at some point in the day.

Well, that point in the day was the very beginning. She walks quietly into the room and sits down on the edge of a chair and starts to introduce herself only to have that chair slip out from beneath her, flip over her head, knock the end table next to it and toss the lamp in the air breaking it. All this came crashing down in a matter of seconds. We all just stared in silence and then busted out laughing at the same time. Cheryl just sat there on the floor, confused. It was such a great moment and a very funny start to the day. These are the moments I so wish I had my camera ready. I will regret not getting a photo of that for sure. Just sitting here thinking about this story still makes me laugh.

After a bunch of jibber jabbering from me and ryan and some lunch it was time for shooting!

Our first model we had lined up fell through at the last minute so we were kind of scrambling to fix this problem and I am actually really happy that it happened because Kamille and Bradley just got engaged and were great models. Not to mention…she (and Cheryl) connected us to Shannon and her amazing vintage heaven!

The shoot wasn’t really a normal engagement session because we only had so much time and explaining things and giving everyone a chance to shoot takes 10 times longer than things usually do so there isn’t our usual variety in this shoot. The best stuff was in the middle of it with the Red jacket, black and white striped shirt and that awesome coral dress we had her in. It just seems very Alice in Wonderland to me which got me all excited. Even though it isn’t our usually variety, I still am really happy with the shots that we got. It was so much fun!

Kamille is a dancer so it was only appropriate to do a little spinning in such a spectacular dress….with red tulle underneath!!

Is the 14mm growing on me? Why yes it is. I love this shot!
I just am madly in love with these yellow gloves. If anyone knows where I could buy some like this..please email me, I just must have some!
This was the first dress. I kinda wish it was a brighter color, but at the same time love how it kinda blends in with her skin tone. The front and back were made of different types of fabric which was just fabulous. I wish I had a better photo of it.
He was pretty quiet most of the time. Kamille is certainly the loud one of the two. It kind of reminds me of me and Ryan, haha. When I took this I was a bit freaked out because of its creepy vibe but then I looked at it on my computer and I was like whoa! This is creepyily awesome. :)
This last dress was made for her. I was so disappointed we ran out of time and had to quit shooting before we could do some really great stuff with it.

We had a great time at the workshop and are really happy how everything worked out. Big thanks to Kamille and Bradley for being so great in front of 8 people.

The next few blogs will be about…
The Hunt Family

This has been a long time coming! We finally finished all of our 2009 work and now have the time to give our attention to our upcoming road trip and workshops!

We just put up all the information for them on a website which as a more detailed PDF you can download as well. All the links, prices, dates and a map are available there.

Click on the image or just go to www.GAUPERphoto.com/BREAKfree to view everything. It is coming up fast and we are only allowing 5 people per workshop so if you want to fill a spot be sure to email us as soon as you can! Ryan@GAUPERphoto.com

Each workshop is being customized for those attending. We will be in contact with you so we can focus mainly on your areas of interest or things you struggle with.

Unfortunately we are going to need to cut of a good sized leg of the original trip so a couple of the big cities are going to get missed this time, sorry guys!! BUT I still want you guys to tell me who is interested because you never know if we get a free weekend we may just come down there just for you! And if not don’t worry we want to make it to more of the east side of the country soon so hold tight.

The main reason we had to do that is for one, it was just a little too much planning, and not enough time. We have learned this year to not overextend ourselves. However, please let us know if you are interested and your state is not one of our 5 that we are stopping at. We may throw in a few more dates if the interest is there!

Another reason was we got an opportunity to visit my mom in China! She has been living over there since last august so we have really been wanting to get over there and visit with her, as well as start on the photojournalism photo-books that we have been wanting to do for so long. I had been talking to her about giving her and the people she works with a better way to show those back home what they are doing over there. This is crucial when they are back in the states trying to raise support and get people on board with their vision. So we have been in contact with her organization she is under; the Jian Hua Foundation. We will be flying around China for 10 days with another couple specializing in video to mix with our photography for this project. So after that we are going to do a little extra curricular traveling with my mom and maybe visit Hong Kong and some southern regions! Which is good since they dont have heat near beijing after march or so. =)

Since we are going to be flying right by hawaii…I figured it would be a shame not to take a well deserved vacation after pushing for so long and so hard! Can ya blame us?

Plus I have some YWAM friends that I would really love to catch up with. I really miss hawaii…. We are so blessed to be able to do that!

So that is where the gap in time is coming from … we will be flying out from SFO and then when we get back we will do a couple more workshops, ….. and then we shall go have a sleep.

The next week, wedding season starts!! yaaaaaaay hah. :) We are actually really excited for a new year to do everything better than the last so I think this years weddings are going to be a lot of fun.

We can’t wait to hang out with all you guys! It’s going to be amazing!!

So if you didn’t see my picture I put up on facebook with a big map of a roughly planned road trip, I have some exciting possibilities that may be something very cool in the near future! We Gaupers are not so much fans of the wintertimes, but we are fans of traveling and having fun with other cool people and helping them break free from the barriers that prevent them from being creative! Sooo what better option to escape michigan’s never ending gloomy winter? A 45 road trip maybe? Could that be any cooler? I submit that it canNOT. So this is some things I drew up based on you awesome people I know around the country, and all the people that have shown interest in us doing something like this.

As far as how the workshop would be; we are planning on them being pretty small and flexible. With so many locations, we will work with each group of people and find out what they want to get better at and we are happy to spill all the beans. We will hopefully be doing some shooting with some local models or anyone you guys think would be good… We are pretty well rounded between Holly and I. Here are some of our strengths, so you can know for sure if you would benefit from something like this with the Gaupers!

Ryan is good at:

-File management
-Technical Lessons (lens selection and perspective)
-Flash (outdoor on location or challenging receptions.
-Finding high variety locations to shoot
-Networking
-Dealing with clients
-Tips while shooting / being proficient for the best odds to nail the shot you want.

Holly is good at:

-Editing in Lightroom and Photoshop together.
-Graphic Design / Identity
-Marketing Ideas / ways to stand out – creative thinking
-Working with models

And we are both pretty good with business methods in general, mostly ones that we have learned the hard way.

A good thing about these smaller workshops is that you can really pick our brains and get a lot of personal attention.

Details:
- $500 each for 1-2 person workshop
- $400 each for 3-5 person workshop

BIG news on the business front!

When Holly and I met she was looking for someone to teach her more about photography and trying to find out if she should go to school again for that instead of sticking with graphic design which is what she graduated with.

At this time, I was looking for someone to design me a logo and website. That’s the premiss of how we met essentially for those of you who didn’t know. So she was looking for a photographer to show her the ropes…We technically have to say we met on-line… Which is kind of embarrassing for us =) She always makes me tell the story when people ask because I can tell it in a way that doesn’t spotlight that fact but doesn’t lie about how we met either!

My point is that at first Holly was with me shooting weddings because I could use a hand being pretty inexperienced, and because she wanted some more practice. We quickly became a great team and have actually been together since my first paying wedding!

So the whole point of this story is that Holly has been more in the background where I got most of the credit for her amazing editing, and a lot of her shots that no-one knew were hers! You can’t say we are just Ryan Richard Photography anymore. It’s not just me, it’s us! She has improved by leaps and bounds and there is no way I could produce what I promise without her. So to celebrate and recognize the goodness she brings to the table, we are now GAUPERPHOTO!

What do ya think? I struggled for a while about changing it to my last name because no one can seem to say it right! If you actually look at it and sound it out, it’s not that hard. Gaw-per. Not Galper, Glopper, Grooper,Goopie,Golper,Gumper, groper or Galapanokis.

GAUPER … I have gone through a lot of frustration, but I am putting my trust into mankind one more so please don’t let me down! Even with Ryan Richard people would always call me Richard for some reason, or say Ryan Richards…So I am counting on you guys to get it right… got it? =)

So anyway, we have a bridal show coming up where we are the only photography vendors. The Radisson is putting on a non-traditional show that is going to be really great! Unfortunately, we have a wedding in Long Island the same day. I have been super pumped to do that wedding but we are bummed to not be able to do the show but we figured a big NY wedding and a big bridal show would be the perfect time to unveil a new logo and name!

Part of the deal of having a free booth and being a preferred vendor all year for the fanciest hotel in town was that I had to shoot the bridal show. Since I obviously couldn’t I asked if I could hire someone out to do that so I could still have the booth. I had someone great in mind and they accepted! My favorite new wedding photographer is Diana Vermeulen of Moxie Photography. I have been referring people to her left and right because she does great work for the price so if we are booked on your date or are a little out of our range, be sure to look her up!

Since we are getting an all new identity, we needed a few fresh new images so we went out for a few shots with my brother in law Dave.

Pretty nice for his first time wielding a nice camera right?

We wanted to do a giant overhaul with a new website and blog but that just wasn’t going to happen by the NY trip and we really wanted to do it for the show and the wedding. Be on the lookout for at least a new blog by the beginning of the summer because a nice blog is LONG overdue and we know that. The new one will be much more enjoyable to visit!

But anyways, that’s the big news! I hope you guys like it. I feel like we have more of our own style and the old logo only portrayed our traditional and classic side but had nothing to do with the rustic and industrial side. I think it suits us much better and is much more modern. Let us know what you think!!

Gauper out =)

Well we had our first workshop in Kalamazoo this weekend and after all that planning and scouting and hard work we got to have some fun!! We found some excellent locations and even more excellent models to be our subjects!

I started out the Day cramming their brains full of technical knowledge while trying to only melt their brains a little bit! I think it went pretty well but there’s only so much you can take in at once!

Then came the shooting. We started out at this cool loaction by some train tracks, only these train tracks had extra rail material! It worked out even better then I had hoped.

Jessie’s head isn’t this big in real life =) I am using the Amazing Canon 14mm f/2.8L II Ultra wide angle lens to get this effect as you can tell later I have a lot of fun with it!! Our second model Alli was awesome as well. Thank you ladies for trashing the dress for us. I think it was worth it =)

Our next location was behind the building we used on Sunday. I found some kind of washing machine graveyard!

And behind THAT was a bunch of old trailers and onother cool yard that made for lots of great variety.

I was pretty proud of everyone for really getting in there and not standing back at eye level I thought I would really have to get on people to get close and use angles but they were great!

You may recognize Noah and Alex since we haven’t updated our website’s front page in a while but they were one of our favorite engagement session and wedding so we thought that would be pros by now, and they proved to be just as comfortable with 12 people snapping away!!
We Had soooo much fun and I met some great people that I think have a ton of potential. We didn’t get to edit as much as I would’t have liked but we are thinking about doing some editing focused workshops soon. I can’t wait to do another one! Huge thanks to our future Bride Gillian for doing hair and make up!! We can’t wait to do a tour and meet even more great photographers and models!!!
